The Slide of Compromise: From a Step to a Seat

The Slide of Compromise: From a Step to a Seat

Ps.1:1-2: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

It always begins with a single, seemingly harmless step. Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to completely abandon their foundation to sit among those who mock everything holy. Instead, it is a quiet, steady drift—a slow, three-stage spiral that coaxes a person from movement, to a standstill, to a permanent seat in the wrong company.

The danger of this slide is how normal it feels while it is happening. The enemy does not invite you to leap into the abyss; he simply invites you to take a casual stroll, slow your pace, and eventually rest. By understanding this progressive trap, we can guard our hearts before the drift begins.

Stage 1: The Casual Drift (Walking)

Imagine strolling down a path. You are just passing through, minding your own business, when you hear a voice. This is the stage of walking. It feels completely harmless because you are still moving; you haven't stopped or committed to anything. You are simply passing by. But as you walk, you find yourself listening to the advice and letting the mindset of the ungodly whisper in your ear.

The ungodly are not necessarily monsters; they are simply people who live their daily lives without reference to God. They advise, reason, and make choices as if He simply does not exist. In the mind, this stage begins with curiosity. You think, I am just listening, it won't affect me. But the human mind is highly adaptable. By casually walking in their counsel, you begin to let their godless logic subtly nudge your direction. The voice of truth is not violently silenced; it is merely crowded out by the reasonable, secular arguments of the world. You are still on your feet, but your compass is already starting to drift.

Stage 2: The Comfortable Pause (Standing)

Faith That Doesn't Sink

Faith That Doesn't Sink

I’ve been thinking about this verse from 1 Timothy 1:19: "Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck."

Paul is writing to Timothy, warning him about what happens when people walk away from both faith and a good conscience. Since I work visually, the image — shipwreck — caused me to stop and think. Shipwreck isn’t just stumbling or drifting. It’s a complete disaster. Something avoidable yet devastating when it happens.

Faith and a Good Conscience Go Together

Faith isn’t just doctrine or mental agreement. It’s more than knowing the right verses or affirming theological truths. Faith is a deep, personal trust in God — a confidence in His character, His promises, and His work through Christ. It’s what anchors us when life gets rough. It’s what keeps us from being tossed around by every new idea or emotion. Faith says, “I believe God is who He says He is, and I will live like that’s true.”

But faith doesn’t stand alone.
