Faith That Doesn't Sink

Faith That Doesn't Sink

I’ve been thinking about this verse from 1 Timothy 1:19: "Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck."

Paul is writing to Timothy, warning him about what happens when people walk away from both faith and a good conscience. Since I work visually, the image — shipwreck — caused me to stop and think. Shipwreck isn’t just stumbling or drifting. It’s a complete disaster. Something avoidable yet devastating when it happens.

Faith and a Good Conscience Go Together

Faith isn’t just doctrine or mental agreement. It’s more than knowing the right verses or affirming theological truths. Faith is a deep, personal trust in God — a confidence in His character, His promises, and His work through Christ. It’s what anchors us when life gets rough. It’s what keeps us from being tossed around by every new idea or emotion. Faith says, “I believe God is who He says He is, and I will live like that’s true.”

But faith doesn’t stand alone.

A good conscience is the inner witness that confirms we’re walking in line with that faith. It’s not about being flawless — it’s about being honest, humble, and responsive to the Spirit. A good conscience means we’re not ignoring conviction, not justifying sin, and not pretending to be something we’re not. It’s the quiet assurance that our choices reflect what we believe.

When we separate the two — when we claim faith but ignore conscience — we start drifting. We might still say the right things, but our lives lose alignment. And Paul warns us: that’s how shipwreck happens.

So, there are TWO questions to ask: (1) Am I trusting God deeply — not just in theory, but in how I respond to pressure, temptation, and opportunity? (2) Is my conscience clear — not perfect, but sincere and open before Him?

Faith and a good conscience are not optional extras in the Christian life; they’re the very tools God gives us to stay aligned, steady, and spiritually sound. So, let’s hold them both — tightly and sincerely — because they’re what keep us from drifting, and what carry us safely through.

How Does This Truth Shape Our Life

If I believe in grace, but act without mercy… If I speak of truth, but compromise privately… Then what I say I believe hasn’t reached my heart — and eventually, something breaks.

Faith isn’t just head knowledge. It’s a lived trust that shapes how we respond, how we speak, and how we walk. And a good conscience keeps that faith grounded in integrity. Not perfection — but sincerity.

Let’s Stay Afloat

This verse challenged me. Am I holding faith — or just remembering it occasionally? Is my conscience clear — or cluttered with compromise? I want to live in a way that doesn’t just talk about truth but protects it with how I live. I hope it speaks in the same way to you.

When faith and conscience walk together, we stay afloat. We move forward with integrity. And we reflect the kind of life that doesn’t just speak truth — it lives it.
