The Revelation of Blood and Forgiveness Across the Dispensations

Redemption has always been tied to blood, but the way God revealed its meaning changed over time. The cross of Christ is the foundation of salvation in every age, yet the understanding of His blood and death unfolded progressively. To grasp this, we must trace the theme across the Old Testament, the earthly ministry of Christ in the Gospels, the preaching of Peter and the Twelve in early Acts, and finally the mystery revealed to Paul. Only then do we see how the blood of Christ takes on its full, once-for-all meaning in the dispensation of grace, and how Hebrews later confirms this truth for tribulation saints.

Old Testament: Blood as Covering, Not Full Payment

From the beginning, God tied forgiveness to blood. When Adam and Eve sinned, He clothed them with skins (Genesis 3:21), showing that blood had to be shed to cover sin. Abel’s offering of the flock was accepted because it was a blood sacrifice (Genesis 4:4). Under the law, God declared, “It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul” (Leviticus 17:11). Yet Hebrews 10:4 makes clear: “It is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”

Animal sacrifices provided temporary covering, but they could not remove sin. Old Testament saints were saved by faith in what God revealed at the time, expressed through obedience to His instructions. Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness (Genesis 15:6). They did not know the cross, but God looked forward to it. Their salvation rested on His provision, not their knowledge of Christ’s blood.

The Gospels: Messiah Presented, Blood Mentioned but Not Understood

“It is finished.”

“It is finished.” (John 19:30)

When Jesus cried out “It is finished” upon the cross, He was not speaking of defeat, but of victory. The Greek word used here is tetelestai, meaning “paid in full.” In that single declaration, the eternal plan of redemption was sealed. The debt of sin was not partially addressed, nor left incomplete—it was fully satisfied by the blood of Christ.

This statement marks the end of the old covenant sacrifices, for the Lamb of God had offered Himself once for all (Hebrews 10:12). No more offerings are required, no more rituals can add to His work. The shadow gave way to the substance, and the law found its fulfillment in Him. Every prophecy concerning His suffering was accomplished, every demand of divine justice met, and every promise of salvation secured.

The depth of this truth is staggering. “It is finished” means that sin’s penalty has been borne, Satan’s power has been broken, and the way to God has been opened. It means that reconciliation is now possible, that peace with God is offered freely, and that eternal life is available to all who believe. What was impossible through human effort is now accomplished through divine grace.

And this cry still echoes today. Though spoken nearly two thousand years ago, its power remains. Salvation is still available because of this expression. Now, while the season of grace continues, do not harden your heart—hear the gospel and place your trust in Jesus Christ. His finished work is the foundation, and faith in Him secures eternal life.

So let us hear His words not as the closing of a life, but as the opening of a door. “It is finished” is the assurance that nothing more needs to be done, nothing more can be added, and nothing more must be paid. The cross stands as the completed work of God’s love, and the invitation remains: believe, and receive the gift of salvation.

Until you get that glorified body, God wants your current one! What?? Why? What would God want with this weak, corrupt, vile, sinful body? The aim of this little study is to find this out.

Rom.12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  (2)  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

If you have read, understood, and received what Paul has taught you in the first 11 chapters of Romans, concerning God’s righteous wrath and what He did through Jesus Christ to justify you and quicken your spirit, you will know that the only proper, and personal response you can make to His grace and love, is to present your body as a living sacrifice to God. But what good is our flesh body to God? Paul, in Romans 3 to 8, has informed you that your flesh is corrupt and sinful and that God’s work to save you was not achieved in your flesh, but judicially in His Son. So, why is Paul appealing to you to give God your futile body? Well God has a use for it, and it is for the glory of His Son.

Rom 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

When we believe the gospel of God’s Son, we have peace with God through our Lord, Jesus Christ. There is NOTHING that can change or threaten that peace we have! It is not dependent on us! That peace is through Christ. Justification is a legal word dealing with one’s judicial standing before God, the Judge. Biblical justification equates to the ungodly sinner being declared righteous, blameless, and innocent, being set free of all charges before God’s throne. Justification = just as if I never sinned.

The End: Adoption and glorification

Rom 8:23-24  And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

I like where your post was headed, but it needs more information to support your conclusion. Can you help us see how you determined, by progressive revelation, that Cain’s offering lacked faith, and needed blood?

ANSWER:

Earlier I mentioned that faith is believing what God has revealed. What God reveals typically keeps us in right standing with Him. Obedience to what God tells us is what saves us. As we advance through the pages of the Bible God reveals new, or additional things to keep us in relationship with Him. It’s these new, or additional things that I refer to as progressive revelation.

Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Shortly after Adam fell into sin, we read the above verse that tells us that the Lord God slew some sort of animal and clothed them with its hide. The covering of Adam and Eve alludes to God covering their sins, and the sacrifice of an animal alludes to the fact that the life (or lifeblood) of another was the price required for that covering.

Adam, no doubt would have passed this knowledge on to his sons. So, when the time came for both Cain and Abel to offer up a sacrifice, it was Abel’s sacrifice that pleased the Lord.

Time for a quick synopsis

Paul’s mystery doctrine is a spiritual message. It cannot be received or understood by the carnal mind. The Corinthians were informed about this in the very beginning of their epistle,

1Co 2:14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Likewise, Paul starts the foundational epistle of Romans with the statement,

Rom 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 

Paul was stating that to continue in his writings, one had to first be saved. In the context of this post, salvation is the condition for enrolment into the curriculum. This is confirmed in the fact that the next few chapters of Romans are a presentation of the gospel, informing us that all men are lost, and need to believe in Jesus Christ to receive the free gift of justification, a quickened spirit, and atonement by the grace of God, Rom 3:23-26.

• Do you believe in Satan? Do you believe a serpent can talk? Do you believe serpent can be smarter than humans? Do you think that God was so stupid to create Satan who will deceive Eve, and then god will dump curses on Eve, and say nothing to Satan. There are numerous problems in my mind about is in Bible.
• Why god kept quite when children were eaten? Why god allowed pagan women to be raped.
• Why god changed Lot’s wife to a pillar of salt, but said nothing to Lot who gulped alcohol and did sex with his daughters.
• Why god told Moses to kill all women who have seen men, and spare others and Moses gave them to his soldiers. Boys with pubic hair were beheaded.
• Why God did not punish David for raping Hittite woman?

Altar calls have been a part of cultural Christianity for a long while, but have never been a part of the gospel of the grace of God.

This has not stopped churches that fail to rightly divide from borrowing Israel’s religion and making it part of church tradition.

Usually placed at the end of a revival sermon, an appeal is made by the preacher to “heed the call”, “come down front”, or “walk the sawdust trail.”

What is down front? According to church tradition, an altar. Where does the trail lead? To a religious practice that often confuses the complete and finished work of Christ.
