The simplicity that is in Christ
Gen.2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
God gave Adam and Eve only one command to adhere to. Other than this one command, they could enjoy the garden and all of creation. When the serpent came along, it homed in on God’s one command and subtly twisted its truth to deceive them.
Similarly, in our dispensation of grace, God gave us only one instruction,
Act.16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Other than this one instruction, and the desire for us to come to a knowledge of the truth, 1Tim.2:4, God gives us the liberty to live our lives, trusting that the knowledge of the truth will provide us with good judgement and keep a clear conscience.
Similarly, in our context, the serpent will come along and home in on that one instruction, to subtly twist its truth to deceive many. Paul gives us the warning,
2Cor.11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
What is, “corrupt the simplicity that is in Christ”? Well, isn’t it to oppose its simplicity, adding all manner of laws, regulation, restrictions, complexities and lies to the truth. Our simplicity is to believe in Christ. The truth is to come to a knowledge of His Word. Anything that diverts from, or complicates this simplicity, is ultimately a form of deception to get our minds and hearts off Christ and onto the world. Beware of this corruption, which, by the way, you will not find in the world as much as in the apostacy of the modern denominational church systems and the convolutions of the religious institutions of today.
Keep your minds filled with the rightly divided Word of truth. Keep your eyes focused on Christ. Keep your hearts filled with songs of praise. Stay in close fellowship with those you trust and love. It’s really as simple as that.
