Learning Point All of the Bible is written for our learning, but not all of the Bible is addressed to us and for our practice. |
Not all of the bible is for you
It might sound strange to hear this, but I'm going to give you a very valid point. Firstly, it's easy to see that the bible is a BIG book. It was written over a period of 1300 years by more than 40 authors (though God is the one TRUE Author) and its content is directed to different people groups over many centuries of time. So, my point is that people would be quite self-centered if they thought that ALL of the bible is directly addressed to them and is about them.
Unfortunately, many Christians do think ALL of the Bible is for them. They grab scriptures from all over the bible, claiming it's promises, they try to obey all the rules and some of them even believe they are a spiritual form of the nation of Israel, whom God declared as "His people".
This form of thinking causes widespread confusion and false religious practices. It's unfortunately a common thing today. This is why the church is so divided and has so many different denominations and beliefs.
If you choose to follow this series, you will learn more details to answer why this is true, but for now I will simply reveal that most of the bible is written for Israel, God's chosen nation, and is addressed to, and is applicable to them.
Deuteronomy 7:6 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
2 Samuel 7:23 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods? 24 For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, Lord, art become their God.
Psalm.135:4 For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure.
Romans 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.
So, with this in mind, what then are the parts of the bible that are addressed to us? As I expose more content in this series, you will recognize that the content that directly applies to us, today, in this grace age, are the epistles of Paul, —Romans to Philemon. Please understand that ALL of scripture is the inspired Word of God...
2 Tim.3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
...but only Paul's epistles are written to us, are about us, the Body of Christ, and are for our daily practice.
